Now more than a concept, Jaguar announced at the 2001 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show that it would now put its F-TYPE roadster into production, giving the automaker a fifth model in its product range.

Jaguar Chairman Dr. Wolfgang Reitzle made the announcement and said, "Jaguar is one of the most evocative brands in the world and there is a renewed commitment at Jaguar to create cars that stir people's emotions. The overwhelmingly positive reaction across the globe to last year's concept has convinced Jaguar to build the F-TYPE roadster."

The F-TYPE was originally introduced at the 2000 North American International Auto Show, in Detroit. The new vehicle was designed to accept a range of powertrain options, starting with the 240 horsepower AJ-V6 engine, which was successfully introduced in the S-TYPE, while a supercharged version with around 300 horsepower is also a possibility. Automatic or manual transmissions would drive the rear wheels, while all-wheel drive was considered a production-feasible option.

While Jaguar did announce it would produce the F-TYPE roadster, no mention of any changes were made. At publication time, it was not reported how much the production model, three-years away by Jaguar's estimation, will differ from the concept.

What is known is that the F-TYPE is smaller than Jaguar's XK range of sports cars, and will most likely be less expensive.
