The GMC division at General Motors has a thing for the "terra" theme -- last year it unveiled its Terradyne concept, and in 2001 have taken it a step further by unveiling the GMC Terracross at the North American International Auto Show.

"Just as last year’s Terradyne concept represents GMC’s vision for the ultimate 'professional grade’ pick-up, Terracross creates an innovative type of SUV, designed to exceed the expectations of the most demanding customers," said Lynn Myers, Pontiac-GMC General Manager.

GM says Terracross is actually three vehicles rolled into one - an SUV, a pick-up and a five-seat convertible ¯ all in versatile package. The automaker said the vehicle would probably appeal to young, urban professionals and people with a need for functionality.

Some of those functionality traits are incorporated into the three-panel glass roof, a reconfigurable mid-gate and gliding rear doors, GM said. The roof’s three glass panels can be moved electronically to various positions and can stack on top of each other, opening up to two-thirds of the entire roof length. When moved to their forward position, the sliding roof segments create an open cargo box at the rear of the vehicle.

The mid-gate has a retractable rear window, integrated into the second seat row backrest, and can be flipped forward and stowed flush with the seat creating an extended, flat cargo floor. The Terracross also employs a unique hinge system that allows the rear doors to glide rearward parallel to the sides of the vehicle, which provides wide-open access to the interior.

The Terracross has room for five, while the front passengers get the added benefit of swivel chairs, which can move to face the rear seats. There are translucent green accents on the dashboard, and a reconfigurable colour instrument cluster that displays information about the vehicle and its systems in several different ways. There's also room for an integrated laptop computer with a cellular modem on the vehicle’s dashboard.

The GMC concept also incorporates the VersaTrak all-wheel-drive system, which automatically delivers torque to the wheels with the most grip for surefooted, stable traction under several different driving conditions.

While GM has added much in the way of functionality, the powertrain is more in the mundane variety, with a 3.4-litre V6 engine connected to a four-speed automatic transmission.
