Various automotive news outlets are reporting that General Motors has given Buick the green light to make its Bengal roadster concept into a full-scale production vehicle.

Reports state that GM's North American Strategy Board approved production of the front-wheel-drive, four-passenger convertible, which could see the light of day in late 2003 or early 2004.

Analysts have speculated that Buick needs the Bengal, as North American sales figures show a downward spiral, which many attribute to an ageing vehicle line-up and customer base.

The Bengal roadster is said to be the beginning in a new line-up of products for Buick. Industry insiders have said the company will look to incorporate classic Buick styling cues, but have them updated and made contemporary so that its vehicle will appeal to younger buyers. An example of some cure includes the Bengal's vertical grille and portholes, which some insiders have said may be used in all future Buick products.

The Bengal concept first made an appearance last January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and was generally accepted by the automotive press.

The concept included a supercharged, 3.4-litre V6 engine that generates 250 horsepower, and is transverse-mounted with a six-speed automatic transmission in front of it, rather than behind.

The Bengal also has Quiet Servant, first shown on Buick's LaCrosse and Cielo concepts, which features voice-activated controls and a reconfigurable, colour heads-up display that shows gauges on demand. The driver can control the car and its systems with voice commands or a four-position joystick on the steering wheel.

The concept also features a retractable tonneau cover that hides the rear seat and a third door on the driver's side.

No word out of the GM camp, yet, as to which styling cues and features will be incorporated into the production model.
