It may only be a concept right now, but the running bet among auto industry insiders is that Audi will turn its new Avantissimo concept into the A4 Avant wagon, some time in the near future.

Debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Sept. 11, the Avantissimo is a sleekly designed wagon, with what looks like loads of room, and a much more aggressive and sleek design than most wagons you can think of - this one actually looks like you want to own it.

Of course, being an Audi the prerequisite amount of performance characteristics have to be in place as well.

Normally, a wagon's purpose is based on functionality - carting the kids to soccer practice, picking up groceries, taking the dog to the vet - in other words, a family vehicle.

When you look under the hood of the concept though, it's anything but.

For the Frankfurt show Audi stuck in a new 4.2-litre V8 'biturbo’ engine, that delivers a ridiculous amount of power in the range of 430-hp. The torque rating is equally as powerful and awesome at about 442 lb.-ft.

Audi said it added a new six-speed automatic transmission to the Avantissimo concept, which can also be operated manually via shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

And don't dare forget the quattro. Audi has of course added its patented permanent four-wheel drive system, where power is channelled to the road by its high-tech, low weight aluminium suspension with air springs at all four wheels.

The German automaker has even taken things a step further, including a choice of three suspension settings that can be selected by the driver at the touch of a button: Automatic, Sport and Comfort.

When Automatic is selected the system varies the firmness of the spring and shock absorber settings according to the car's road speed, and also alters the ground clearance. Basically, the faster you make the Avantissimo go, the centre of gravity is lowered, so both body control and aerodynamics are optimized.

The company went on to state that when the manual suspension control setting is chosen, the electronically defined safety limits prevent the car from being driven at too high a speed when an inappropriate suspension setting is in use.

After the wagon has reached its destination, the electro-hydraulic parking brake can be applied at the press of a button, and released again when next you get in the car.

Although it appears likely that the Avantissimo will see the light of day in one form or another, Audi has said some of the technology that appears on the wagon most certainly will. An item in particular, according to the car company, is a new ergonomic control system that simplifies cabin functions and reduces the driver’s workload.

Audi has dubbed the system Multi Media Interface (MMI), which the company says combines all the vehicle's information and communication features; from the audio system to Internet service.

Drivers can access and select functions through a large rotary switch and pushbuttons. Information is displayed on a monitor in the driver’s direct field of vision above the control panel.

Looking at the roof of the Avantissimo is something else. Portions of it are constructed from panels of "sandwich" glass with a dimming unit that extends down to the tailgate. Audi has even included photo-electric elements, utilizing solar power, so that the vehicle can operate the interior fan even when the engine is off.

The German automaker seemingly has pulled out all of the stops with the technology it has included in its latest concept. The Avantissimo is also equipped with new security systems, such as driver identification.

Audi has included a signal sensor in the car that identifies the driver automatically. The engine will not start until the driver is identified.

This system has a second function. It also utilizes a fingerprint scanner that stores driver preferences, and when activated selects seat position and air conditioning settings specific to a particular driver's designations.
