Perhaps spreading it on a little thick, Saab debuted its 9X concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show recently, and went on record as saying that powerful looking mechanical animal was a "four dimensional" car "that defies automotive convention."

Combining elements from four different areas of automotive design - coupe, roadster, wagon and pickup - the 9X is a site to behold, Saab's boasting not withstanding.

The Swedish automaker said it designed the car to provide the utmost in performance, but added that it wanted to combine flexibility and versatility to the concept, making it appropriate for everyday use.

Visually, the 9X is striking. The look of the car incorporates a wraparound windscreen and high waistline, which is coupled with an aggressive stance. The 2+2 seating format, along with the frame glass doors and removable glass roof panels add to the previously mentioned elements to give the 9X a racy look.

When you move to the rear, however, the 9X does take on somewhat of a different shape. There is a flip-down tailgate and retracting rear window, as well as an open rear deck and telescopic floor extension. These elements give a portion of the 9X a look akin to a long wagon, or housed pickup.

Saab said it was using the 9X as a benchmark toward future design, perhaps to create vehicles that can be used for a variety of purposes. The company also said that the Frankfurt show marked a journey of at least one new concept vehicle that the company will debut annually for the next six years.

Now that the look of the 9X has been taken care, let's get to the heart of the beast.

For the concept, Saab placed a 3.0-litre turbocharged V-6 engine, transversely mounted in the front of the 9X. The company projects the engine can produce 300-horsepower at 5,500 rpm, with a maximum torque of 302 lb.- ft, at 2,200 rpm. Performance car numbers if we ever saw them.

The engine is married to a six-speed, sequential, manual gearbox, and runs on four-wheel- drive, handled through a rack and pinion, power-assisted steering system.

Top speed, which Saab says has been electronically limited, is 250-km/h, and the 9X is projected to go from 0 - 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.

Saab says don't look for the 9X to be produced anytime soon, but the automaker will look at incorporating some elements of the concept into the designs of future production vehicles.
