"The F400 is part of the evolution of today's cars," Dave Sheppard, North American vice president of marketing for Mercedes-Benz, said in a statement released by the auto show.

"While the F400 looks like something out of a science fiction movie," said Sheppard. "Science fiction comes to life in the F400. The technology we are researching is not only useful, but also life-saving."

One of the most exciting features on the F400 is the active camber system that tilts the wheels of the car between 0 and -20 degrees, allowing for maximum stability and friction on any road conditions.

"When used in conjunction with newly developed tires, it provides 30 percent more lateral stability than a conventional system," said Sheppard.

When the two-seater F 400 corners, the outer wheels tilt inwards, leaving only the inner area of these tires in contact with the road.

This area of the tire's tread is slightly rounded off, similar to motorcycle tires. The tread pattern and the rubber blend have been specially selected to ensure highly dynamic and extremely safe cornering. When driving straight ahead, however, the outer portion of the tires contact the road, providing excellent high-speed and low-noise performance. Two different concepts therefore come to fruition in a single tire, thanks to active camber control.

The F400 is full of new technology that changes to maximize the versatility of the car.

"If it had wings, it would fly," said Sheppard. Some of the features being tested in the F400 will show up in other Mercedes-Benz cars.  The F400 is a moving laboratory, built as a working lab to develop tomorrow's technology.

Another new feature being tested is the electronic steer-by-wire system. In this state-of-the-art system electronic control units replace the mechanical and hydraulic pedals. Sensors pick up the driver's steering inputs and send this information to two microcomputers that, in turn, control an electrically driven steering gear The units can also pick up and respond to critical road conditions even faster than the best driver, adding to the safety of the F400.

"The F400 is youthful and adventurous in nature. It creates vast potential for technology to make driving safer and more enjoyable," said Sheppard.

The technology Mercedes-Benz is researching in the F400 is part of the company's mission to provide excellent value and safety in all of their vehicles. Mercedes-Benz also takes pride in the variety it offers to its consumers. "No matter what you dream of driving, we have it," said Sheppard.
