Looking for the "ultimate expression of luxury?" Lincoln Mercury may have the solution ... the Lincoln Continental concept.

The company described the Continental as a "powerful but understated executive car" in a statement released by the automaker. The company hopes to introduce production models based on the Continental by mid-decade.

"Continental embodies the qualities that define the design direction Lincoln has chosen: elegance, simplicity, precision and an overall restraint," Gerry McGovern, design director, was quoted as saying. "Someday, a flagship like Continental could join Lincoln’s showroom."

Two main goals in the design of the Continental were to maximize interior space and optimize ingress and egress. The cabin is centred within the wheelbase, and provides "exceptionally large" passenger space.

The body is finished in Silver Sea Spray, and the design has a strong horizontal emphasis in its lines that defines the front of the car. A signature grille marks the Continental as a Lincoln. Under the hood sits a 6.0 litre, V12 engine that delivers 414 horsepower, attached to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Other features define the Continental as a luxury executive car: the power centre-opening doors that trigger either by remote or by touching the aluminum door handles, or the large luggage tray that slides out of the trunk by remote control to present luggage and golf club cases, for example.

The full-width instrument panel can be reconfigured for engine functions or vehicles systems, which include a THX-certified audio AM/FM radio/CD/DVD system and a concierge service.

The concierge service allows passengers to check weather, make restaurant reservations, seek route assistance or get personalized financial market updates. The telephone functions are hands-free, and there’s a mouse built into the centre console.

And what would a luxury car be without comfortable seats? The interior seating is inspired by Eames lounge chairs, and is covered in full-grain aniline leather. The overhead lighting is covered by a translucent silk panel, and the flooring is a close-sheared midnight blue sheepskin. The seats turn into a bed by folding down the centre portion of the front seat back.

For those who would rather do work, there are built-in laptop tables that stow in the console. Passengers can enjoy a drink using the crystal and drinks dispenser found in the cabinet between the rear seats, or indulge in a cigar from one of the built-in humidors.

The Continental concept is the culmination of two years of research that began in early 2000.
