Concept vehicles are a staple at auto shows, but Volvo went one step further at the 2003 New York International Auto Show, and is letting visitors have a say in the design of future concepts.

The Concept Lab Volvo is a computer-based interactive design experience that features five concept studies that demonstrate how a full range of small Volvos could look. Among the tangible vehicle models are:

  • A yellow sport sedan: This vehicle explores how dynamic a compact sedan can be, Volvo said in a statement. Ultra-light construction is used to increase fuel economy and many of the visible and structural and suspension parts are derived from motorcycle design.
  • A sports coupe: This concept combines "retro" shapes from earlier Volvos and a futuristic view on a compact two-seater sports car. It also includes a zero emission powertrain with a hybrid battery pack.
  • A small SUV: According to Volvo, this vehicle shows how the flexibility of a large SUV can come in a compact size. It allows off-road use as well as urban convenience. The load fixation system is integrated in the roof design.
  • An "Urban Jungle Rider": This concept is an "extremely compact" four-wheel drive roadster with a flexible roof set-up. The glass roof may be removed, exposing the aluminum structural frame.
  • A four-seat hatchback: Perhaps the shortest Volvo ever, this concept has extremely short front and rear over hangs. It could be a three- or five-door design, according to Volvo.

Each scale model is paired to a touch-screen computer monitor. Visitors answer questions about each vehicle, such as design or safety features that Volvo says would help determine how the concepts should be brought to market.
