It's been more than 30 years since Dodge ruled the streets with HEMI power and rear-wheel-drive performance. That's about to change, with the introduction of its 2003 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 concept.

"Dodge Magnum is the new form of American muscle," said Dieter Zetsche, President and CEO of the Chrysler Group. "With its innovative packaging, performance and utility, there's nothing else like it. While Chrysler Pacifica is the premium sports tourer, Dodge Magnum is the performance sports tourer that packs a powerful punch and the functionality of an all-wheel drive sport utility. Armed with HEMI Inside and rear-wheel drive, Dodge Magnum delivers power in a package that offers unmatched flexibility and versatility."

While presented as a concept vehicle at the 2003 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, the Dodge Magnum SRT-8 provides a strong hint at the production version of Chrysler Group's much-anticipated rear-wheel drive "LX" vehicle that will go on sale in 2004 under the Magnum name.

The legendary HEMI that powered Dodge's muscle cars of the 1960s has been re-engineered and reborn as a modern, high-performance, fuel-efficient and durable powerplant. The all-new 5.7-liter HEMI V8 is supercharged for the Magnum SRT-8 concept, churning out an estimated 430 horsepower and biting down with 480 lbs.ft. of torque. Power is distributed by a 5-speed AutoStick (sequential shift mode) automatic transmission.

Dodge brings back rear wheel drive to its car lineup, handling the massive power outputs through an all-new independent five-bar rear multi-link layout. The front layout is a short- and long-arm (SLA) setup. Massive 20-inch alloy wheels are shod with 275/40R20 performance tires up front and 295/40R20s in the rear. Traction and stability control are standard fitments, as are antilock brakes.

The Magnum powertrain and suspension system work together for a precise balance of performance and handling. For ultimate power distribution, an all-wheel drive version of the production Dodge Magnum will also be available.

"In terms of performance, design and function, the Dodge Magnum SRT-8 concept will leave its mark as one of the coolest vehicles on the road," said Zetsche. "It is aimed squarely at the next wave of automotive enthusiasts looking for passionate performance, an all-new proportion and a vehicle you can use for just about anything."

Among the luxury amenities are leather upholstery and trim, heated seats, climate control, trip computer with navigation system, in-dash six-CD changer, competition gauges and drilled pedals, and a removable cooler in the left quarter trim panel.

The rear seat folds down in a 60/40 split to expand the cargo area from a standard 27 cubic feet. Access from the rear is through a unique large opening thanks to a tailgate that is cut into the roof. Under-floor storage provides security for precious items.
