Mercedes-Benz introduced a new concept of luxury at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Vision CLS combines the "elegance and dynamism of a coupé with the comfort and practicality of a full-fledged saloon."

Measuring 4910 mm long with a wheelbase length of 2854 mm, the Vision CLS coupé study is a synthesis of coupe and sedan, according to a statement released by Mercedes-Benz. Its exterior design is uses "elegant yet instantly dramatic lines," while housing a 265 hp diesel engine that can take the concept from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Conversely, the engine also achieves a fuel economy of 7.5 l per 100 km, according to Mercedes-Benz.

The high-torque biturbo engine is combined with the new 7G-TRONIC, the world's first seven-speed automatic transmission for passenger cars. It ensures "supremely easy gear changes and fast acceleration in any gear," Mercedes says.

Inside the four-door concept, occupants will enjoy ample space. A gap of 829 mm between front and rear seats puts the Vision CLS in sedan territory, Mercedes says. The trunk also offers more space than most coupes at 470 litres.

The Vision CLS is equipped with various safety innovations, such as adaptive front air bags, window bags and side bags, as well as belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all four seats. Further technical highlights of the concept include the Active Light System, Cornering Light and the electrohydraulic brake system Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC).

Is the Mercedes Vision CLS a vision of things to come for the company? Depending on public opinion, which the automaker will gauge at international Auto Shows in 2004, it just may be.
