Volvo is currently designing a new two-seater concept car where the passenger sits directly behind the driver.

Called the Tandem, the vehicle ranges from 51 to 57 inches wide, and was built so that two vehicles can fit in the same traffic lane, side by side.

And the car's arrival may not be that far off. According to those working at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center (VMCC) in southern California.

"Maybe it sounds over-the-horizon, but we could deliver that vehicle before 2010," says VMCC science officer Ichiro Sugioka.

The Tandem could work with a fuel cell, an electric motor or a conventional internal-combustion engine, though those working on the vehicle still want it to be something that is fun to drive.

"People will only change if they feel a sense of fun and enthusiasm with their driving environment," says Doug Frasher, strategic design chief.

Those working at VMCC are still looking at ways to have the Tandem uphold Volvo's reputation as a company that makes some of the world's safest vehicles.

"We compensated for the Tandem's light weight with new occupant restraint concepts designed to handle frontal collisions with heavier vehicles," says Kolita Mendis, structures and safety engineering manager. "Also, the central positioning of Tandem occupants leaves ample room on either side to implement structural features mitigating the severity of side impacts.
