VW convertible: what a concept!

Volkswagen has announced plans to launch a four-seat convertible for the 2006 model year, as it continues its push into more upscale market segments.

The as-yet unnamed production car will be derived from this Concept C unveiled at the 2004 Geneva International Auto Show.

As with other recent convertibles from various makers, the Concept C sports a retractable metal roof that combines the best attributes of both a coupe and a convertible. It takes a few seconds to retract at the push of a button.

The production version will be positioned between the Jetta and Passat within the VW lineup, and will likely sport the same engine combinations as those models -- both a turbo four cylinder and V6. It is doubtful it will use VW's reknowned turbodiesel or the all-wheel drive systems from the Passat.

VW wants to position the new entry against the likes of the Mercedes CLK roadster and BMW's 3 Series Cabriolet, which means it will likely be priced in the $50-$65,000 range.

The new vehicle is scheduled to start production in Portugal in the fall of 2005, for introduction early in 2006. It will be built at the plant that currently builds the VW Sharan minivan and its twin sisters Ford Galaxy and SEAT Alhambra.

The near-production version will likely see the light of day at autoshows in the fall of 2004 and winter of 2005, at which point more information will undoubtedly be available
