Audi is getting a little wild, with a 4x4 concept currently known as Steppenwolf, though it could take on a more North American identity if it makes it to production.

If the vehicle makes it to North America, it may be known as the Coyote, with Audi stating it has plans to make the vehicle a serious off-road brand. The German maker recently introduced the All-Road quattro production wagon which could prove to be a predecessor to Steppenwolf/Coyote.

The Steppenwolf is based on the Golf/A3 platform, and Audi has designed the car to handle rough terrain and more extreme road conditions.

Some of the Audi hierarchy have said Steppenwolf is a direct descendant of the quattro and sport quattro product line, but utilises a different traction system, Haldex, as opposed to the Torsen system currently used on Audi's quattros.

The Haldex system electronically adds rear-wheel traction, when required, and the Steppenwolf moves purely on front-wheel drive in normal road conditions. The concept is powered by a 3.2-litre V6 engine, which has an output of 225 horsepower, and a current top speed just over 230 km/h.

Analysts are predicting that Steppenwolf could be a series production vehicle, and would fit in the market currently occupied by Toyota's RAV-4 and the Suzuki Vitara.

While made for rugged going, Audi has also added some amenities, including two different removable roofs; a carbon-fibre hardtop, or a textile softtop.
