Continuing its tradition of bold concept designs, DaimlerChrysler has introduced the Jeep Hurricane at the 2005 North American International Auto Show (NAISA). Senior VP of Chrysler Group Design Trevor Creed called it 'the extreme example for the Jeep brand.'

And bold may be an understatement, as the Hurricane is powered by not one, but two Hemi engines - one in front and one in the back of the Jeep. Each engine delivers the same power - 335-horsepower and 370 lbs-ft. of torque each for a total of 670 hp and 740 lb-ft of torque.

Both engines are equipped with the Chrysler Group Multi-Displacement System, which changes how many cylinders are powering the Hurricane depending on what the driving conditions are. It can be use 4, 8, 12 or 16-cylinders at any given time.

Jeep takes pride in the off-road capabilities of its vehicles and the Hurricane is no exception. There are 14.3 inches of ground clearance on the Hurricane, and for even more off-road capabilities, it features the ability - when needed - to have all four wheels turning in the same direction at the same time. This allows the vehicle to move sideways without changing the direction the vehicle is pointing.

'Out in the wilderness, changing direction in minimal space can mean the difference between an afternoon of adventure and a distress call back to the trailhead," Creed said. "The multi-mode four-wheel steering system on Jeep Hurricane is designed to offer enthusiasts the next level of performance and unexpected maneuverability.'

The one-piece body is made of structural carbon fibre and the suspension and powertrain are mounted directly to the body. An aluminum spine that runs under the body makes for an overall lightweight but strong design. The Jeep concept weights in at 3,850 lbs.

The Hurricane's appearance is being described as minimalist, with Jeep's seven-slot grille, two seats and no doors.

The Hurricane has 20" wheels, a 5-speed automatic transmission and a wheelbase of 108.1 inches.
