Sporting the silhouette of a 'raging moose' on its side, Volvo's new supercharged V8 XC90 will hit the Great White North for the first time at the 2005 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Ontario.

Volvo describes the XC90 concept not as a typical SUV, but as a PUV - a power utility vehicle. Vic Doolan, president of Volvo Cars of North America (VCNA) stated that this vehicle will remain a concept only and won't make it to production.

"This is just to get the juices flowing; to draw attention to the Volvo brand in a way that we haven't before," Doolan was quoted as saying at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.

The XC90 is the first Volvo vehicle ever to house a V8 engine. The engine was tailored specifically for the XC90 in fact. It's just under 30 inches long and 25 inches wide, making it the smallest V8 on the market. The concept XC90 produces an estimated - and massive - 600-horsepower and 500 lbs.-ft of torque. A huge intercooler has been mounted below the front fascia. The PUV makes use of a 6-speed geartronic tranmission.

The XC90 PUV sits on four 20-inch tires, with big 13" brakes on the rear wheels and even bigger 15" brakes up front. It also sits two inches lower than a production XC90.

Volvo wouldn't be caught dead making a vehicle - concept or not - that doesn't have the most up-to-date safety features, and this XC90 concept is no different. It features all-wheel drive as well as a transversely-mounted engine because, as Volvo's Hans Wikman says: "a transverse engine is helpful in maintaining the frontal crumple zones in the XC90 and thus not compromise on protective safety."
