Toyota used the 2005 Calgary Auto Show as a venue to show off the new 4-wheel-drive Toyota FJ Cruiser concept vehicle. The new sport utility vehicle will be available as a production vehicle in 2006.

Toyota is stressing this vehicle as being aimed toward the youth market. As Tony Wearing, Managing Director of Toyota Canada Inc. says: "The concept effectively connects two growing markets in Canada -- the light truck segment and the emerging youth market," said

The FJ Cruiser has adopted several design cues from the original FJ such as a wide and narrow grille, round headlights, two-tone roof cap and wraparound rear windows.

Toyota has still added plenty of the 'new' to the FJ Cruiser, giving it a long wheelbase and wide track for added stability. It also includes spotlights on both outside mirrors, a front spotlight and a front-end towing winch. The two-piece rear glass panel retracts into the roof and rear hatch for easy access into the cargo area.

Powering the FJ Cruiser concept is a 3.4-litre V6 engine which is equipped with a TRD (Toyota Racing Development) supercharger to produce 250-horsepower. This is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

All seats in the FJ Cruiser concept fold flat for maximum cargo-carrying capacity. With no gaps in the floor, the SUV can fit two people in their sleeping bags with the seats down according to Toyota.

Production version

The production version that was shown at the Chicago Auto Show in February of 2005 has a 4.0-litre V6 that generates 245-horsepower and 282 lbs-ft. of torque. It is paired with a 5-speed automatic tranmission on both 4X2 and 4X4 or an optional 6-speed manual on the 4X4. It rides on a modified 4Runner platform and has four 17-inch wheels.

The production FJ Cruiser has a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs., 9.6-inches of ground clearance and a wheelbase of 105.9-inches.
