Dodge has plans of grabbing the mid-size SUV market by the horns with its newest concept, the full-time four-wheel drive Dodge Nitro. It's yet another example of Dodge's new in-your-face, bold and aggressive look coupled with a powerful engine.

The Nitro would be the first mid-size SUV for Dodge. It carries the same crosshair grille appearing on most new Dodge products, as well as chrome dual exhaust tail pipes, an integrated trailer tow hitch, silver and black-trimmed roof rack and brushed silver license plate visor.

Despite these several design features, Rick Aneiros, vice president - Jeep and Truck Design says "The vehicle is not just an exercise in design; its attributes are functional and purposeful."

Dodge gave the Nitro a very spacious interior that is flexible for both people and cargo. It has 32.3 cu. ft. of cargo space with the 2nd row of seats up, but folding them down more than doubles that number to 66.9 cu. ft. Both rear seats and front passenger seat fold flat. The rear cargo floor is made of rugged-texture vinyl that is easy to clean, according to Dodge, and it contains modular storage bins and a first aid kit.

The interior continues with the design aspect that the exterior follows. Up front sits a three-pod, four-gauge instrument cluster featuring white gauges and red pointers accented by silver bands. The centre console is covered in silver and houses a DVD-based navigation radio with a seven-inch LED screen. Satin silver accents can also be found on the control buttons, shifter knob, door handles, gauges and speakers.

The seats are black leather with bright red inserts. The centre of the headrests include black netting, similar to those found on some roadsters, for a more fun look.

The Nitro stays true to its name, given that it's able to reach a top speed of 175 km/h and can go from 0-100 km/h in 9.6 seconds. Keep in mind that it is a mid-size SUV with an estimated curb weight of 4115 lbs. Under the hood sits a 3.7-litre SOHC V6 engine that makes an estimated 210-horsepower and 235 lb.-ft. of torque.
