Designed as a reference vehicle for a new type of tires, the Maybach Exelero was unveiled in Berlin in May 2005.

The ultra-sporty Exelero two-seater coupe is a modern interpretation of another test vehicle that was based on the legendary Maybach SW 38 from the 1930s. In test runs at a high-speed track in Italy, it reached a top speed of just over 350 km/h - a world record for a limousine, which is how the company describes the vehicle. The Exelero produces 700-horsepower thanks to a V-12 twin-turbocharger engine.

It also weighs over 2.66 tons so that the new tires - developed by Fulda - could cope with extreme examples of weight, dimensions and size to fully test their capabilities.

The basis for the Exelero is the Maybach 57 and according to the company it was very difficult transforming the 57 (essentially a limousine) into a coupe. After realizing that the Maybach type 12 engine wouldn't provide the needed power to reach 350 km/h, a team at Mercedes Benz stepped up to help. They increased the displacement from 5.6-litres to 5.9-litres and the turbo charge was optimized.

There are currently no plans to put the Exelero into production.
