The Concept-X from Mitsubishi gives a glimpse into the future of the company's popular Evolution performance sedan. It was introduced at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show.

The Concept-X combines both Mitsubishi's new design direction as well as the Evolution's spartan performance image. It features an oversized grille and the front end borrows design cues from a jet fighter to 'hint at the huge quantities of air it draws in and at the car's road-hugging stability' according to the company.

The concept is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder MIVEC engine and mated with a six-speed automatic transmission with a clutchless manual mode. The driver can opt to use paddle shifters mounted on the steering column.

This powertrain is used in conjunction with lightweight materials and a new all-wheel drive system for an even sportier feel, true to the Evolution's reputation. Light aluminum was used extensively on the roof, engine hood, trunk lid, fenders, roof and front and rear door panels. By lowering the weight on the upper areas of the car, such as the roof, the centre of gravity is lowered, while shaving weight off of the peripheral elements such as the doors reduces the moment of inertia, making the overall steerability and handling of the car much improved.

The suspension features a MacPherson strut at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear and 'Super All-Wheel Control' (S-AWC) is also used on the Concept-X to up the vehicle's handling abilities. The S-AWC system is based on Mitsubishi's full-time four-wheel drive system used in the Lancer Evolution but also combines active brake control, active steering system and roll control suspension for a fully-integrated system.

The interior of the Concept-X does more to show where Mitsubishi wants to move in the future in terms of design. The cockpit features a new multimedia system that, according to the company, encourages a dialogue between driver and machine. A high definition LCD monitor features a real-time display of the vehicle's S-AWC system in action as well as the nav system and DVD controls. Rear passengers aren't left out either - LCD displays are shown on the back of each front seat that share the driving-related information.

The Concept-X has a four person seating capacity, features 20-inch wheels and tires and has a 2,650 mm.
