A full 45 years after the original MINI Traveller was introduced, MINI will be showing a new concept version of the vehicle at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show.

The MINI Concept Tokyo's look is updated to share the current MINI design philosophy. Examples include wide-opening doors, a coupe-like look (no B-pillar), silver metallic paintwork and exquisite interior materials.

To accentuate the car's sporting look, the MINI Concept Tokyo features an air intake on the hood as well as twin tailpipes. It also looks elegant and is meant to be functional as well. The high roof helps with this, as does the fact that all four doors come with suspension points and hinges with parallelogram kinematics swivelling to the side and front in one single movement, thus offering maximum access to the interior of the car.

With no B-pillar, the MINI Concept Tokyo concept gives off an almost coupe-like impression. The driver and front passenger seats swivel for easy access to the two rear seats. Entry to the rear seats is also aided by the car's long wheelbase.

Another highlight of the MINI Concept Tokyo is the cargo box in the floor. It includes various functions such as the cover on the top of the floor box extending outward to double as a loading aid. The cover can also be swivelled up to double as a partition between the passenger area and loading compartment.

There is also a sports utility box that can be hooked on the rear side windows when they are lowered. Loading is possible from both the inside and the outside and it will be easy to pass objects from one side to the other. To further aid the loading of materials, both rear seats can be folded individually and flat.

Floating elements inside the MINI Concept Tokyo make for a less-cluttered look. The only thing that covers the foot area is the central 'island' that forms the centre console, and the dashboard itself appears to be floating.

Many interior surfaces are covered in leather to help enhance the vehicle's modern styling.
