Several new and redesigned hybrid vehicles were shown at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. Subaru changed things up by introducing North America to a two-seat grand tourer performance hybrid that goes by the name the B5-TPH.

The performance vehicle features Subaru's new Turbo Parallel Hybrid (TPH) powertrain system. Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries has been working on the TPH system for years now and will test it on certain vehicles in the Japanese market in 2007.

The TPH powertrain places a 10-kW motor generator between a vehicle's engine and its automatic transmission. Combining it with the turbocharged Boxer engine gives it not only excellent acceleration but also improved fuel economy. Electric motor-assist is another feature that has been added to help boost engine torque at low speeds.

In addition, FHI is planning on equipping the B5-TPH with a manganese lithium-ion battery for even better performance.

Subaru says that the TPH system will eventually be incorporated with the company's other core technologies - being the Boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive system.
