A lot of companies claim to have SUVs that feature the soul of a sports car, but Hyundai really, honestly may be onto something here.

The HCD9 Talus is a 2+2 concept that features a lot of exterior curves, with a long hood and short back end. It houses a 4.6-litre V8 engine, and obviously is much bigger than your typical MX-5, or Tiburon for that matter.

According to Hyundai, the Talus gets some inspiration from the newly redesigned Sante Fe SUV, such as the front grille, headlamps and bodyside feature lines. Also recognizable from the exterior are an arcing roofline and tapering greenhouse highlight as well as the exterior profile that emphasizes the car's broad shoulders and wide stance.

The Talus has front-hinged front doors and rear-hinged rear 'jump' doors. The door release is integrated into the B-pillar to allow for a cleaner bodyside.

In terms of utility, the Talus has a power-operated rear clamshell trunk opening and fold-flat rear seats. In terms of more aesthetics, the rear includes dual exhaust tips that are integrated into the rear fascia.

The interior includes metallic trim on the centre console and blue LED lighting throughout.

"Sitting behind the wheel of the Talus will make you feel privileged and empowered by the luxurious appointments and higher seating position," said Dragan Vukadinovic, senior creative designer. "We wanted to push the expectations of the sports car interior by injecting as many luxury cues as possible. The center console was designed to be visually alluring while providing all the practical functions a driver expects."

The centre stack was designed to look like a jeweled pendant hanging from a necklace, according to Hyundai. The cockpit includes a hood that retracts to show a 10-inch LCD monitor, air vents and a clock capable of displaying time in three different time zones. Rear passengers have the luxury of their own set of audio controls as well as nine-inch LCD DVD monitors mounted in the rear of the front seats.

The interior is finished in leather, with brown colours to 'evoke the warm affluence of a western lodge' along with accented metallic finishes to add a technological look toward the future.

Hyundai also says the HDC9 Talus is equipped with electronic stability control, night vision, shift-by-wire transmission, wireless Internet and adaptive cruise control.
