An all-new, urban-oriented counterpart to the Honda Element launches in the fall of 2006 with an exclusive sport suspension, larger wheels and tires, unique styling and special features.

The Element SC prototype rides about three inches lower than the stock Element, with a sport suspension that delivers sports car-like handling. Aerodynamic body add-ons further lower the vehicle's stance with a ground-hugging presence.

Exclusive to the Element SC are fully painted exterior panels and trim pieces, a slightly lowered roofline, projector-beam headlights and an aero-enhanced black grille, custom front bumper, custom 21-inch cast aluminum alloy wheels shod with 245/35R21 high-performance tires, and custom copper-appearance brake calipers displayed in the wide-opening 5-spoke wheels.

The interior complements the city performance demeanor with a driver-oriented center console that has enclosed storage areas ideal for mobile phones and MP3 players, copper hue instrument panel lighting backlit with LEDs, black trim and a carpeted floor (Elements have traditionally stuck to a rubberized floor mat).

"The SC prototype is designed to portray a city-dwelling, style-conscious Element," said Jim Miller, executive vice president, Honda Canada. "Instead of emphasizing features that accommodate outdoor sports and similar activities, the Element SC injects a new dimension of urban sophistication that can best be characterized as a 'night performer'."

Power comes from a 2.4-litre, DOHC, i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine that boosts horsepower over the 2006 Element to 166 horsepower (from 156). The increase is achieved primarily through the addition of high-flow intake and exhaust, and high-lift camshafts. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, with a 5-speed automatic optional. Additional enhancements include drive-by-wire throttle control.

Safety "Elements" include front side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes (ABS). A new Integrated Seat Belt System on the front seats provides better restraint in crash situations, and also allows rear seat occupants to exit the vehicle more easily.
