Buick is jumping on the crossover band wagon with Enclave, a luxury SUV concept that provides a glimpse of a future Buick vehicle.

Introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Enclave is engineered with an innovative level of interior flexibility with seating for up to six, a bronze-tinted near-full-length skylight and a unique in-dash/in-seat/overhead DVD entertainment system that allows viewing of up to four different DVD selections at once for the ultimate in personalized, in-vehicle entertainment.

Enclave's design is highly detailed, evident in the double-arch fenders meant to accent both the vehicle's athletic stance and its lithe profile. Gently curving, full-bodylength lines are meant to emote the traditional Buick grace.

"The name Enclave evokes images of style, luxury and the privacy of a quiet, protected space," said Steve Shannon, Buick general manager. "Although this is a conceptual representation, the Enclave production model will have the same graceful look and refined detail when it is introduced in the not-too-distant future."

Signature Buick cues include a waterfall grille (in a subdued, black chrome appearance) with "tri-shield" emblem, and portholes on the front fenders.

Pushing the wheels out to the corners of the vehicle creates a bold proportion and imparts a sense of sure-footedness, augmented 21-inch, seven-spoke wheels that fill the wheels wells. The lower section of the vehicle is finished in a low-gloss, chip-resistant finish.

Jewelled headlamp and taillamp housings, streamlined chromed roof rack rails and the visual heft of the twin, chrome exhaust outlets portray luxury and craftsmanship. The High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps turn in tandem with the direction of the front wheels.

Enclave's two-toned interior was designed with personal space in mind, creating a feeling akin to that aboard a corporate jet (especially evident in the flip-down wood-trimmed trays in the front seatbacks). Six individual, leather seats in three rows are surrounded by curved and round elements that harken back to the style of classic Buicks.

Brushed aluminum trim on components such as the air vents, door and instrument panels, pedals and gauge cluster reflect contemporary style while natural materials such as leather (seats, inserts and headliners) and camphor burl wood provide warmth and convey luxury.

Lighting is provided by a "halo" around the skylight, Tiffany-style lamps for the middle and rear seats, and accessory lamps integrated over the second row. A Buick logo inside the power liftgate is also illuminated, as are the footwells when a door is opened.

The seats in each of the three rows are separated by a unique console that runs from the instrument panel to the third-row seats. Each row's console includes climate control switches, audio/entertainment controls, cupholders, a storage bin and a jewelled, Tiffany-style analog clock. A matching clock is mounted at the top-center of the instrument panel.

Passengers also can select from a wide array of entertainment options delivered through four DVD screens. The front-seat passenger can flip down the front visor to unveil a combination mirror and DVD screen; third-row passengers can view a screen that flips up from the centre console; and, the middle row gets a movable (fore and aft on an electronic track) overhead vanity with two flip-down screens. Each screen in the vehicle is capable of playing a different audio/video selection, giving the Enclave the capability of playing four DVDs simultaneously. Also, the dash-mounted navigation screen is capable of playing DVDs when the vehicle is parked.

Power to Enclave is provided by a 270-hp 3.6-litre DOHC V6 with variable valve timing. A 6-speed automatic transmission sends powers to all four wheels.

The production Enclave is due in 2007, to reportedly replace both the current Rendezvous and Rainier.
