Whether you know what the Small Premium Utility segment is or not, it's about to get a little more crowded come 2009.

This is when Volvo plans on expanding their lineup with the newest XC vehicle, the XC60, which joins the XC90 and XC70. In the meantime, Volvo is whetting car enthusiasts' appetites with the XC60 concept which is being introduced at the 2007 North American International Auto Show.

Volvo says the coupe will have the cross-country capabilities of its other off-road vehicles while maintaining the sportiness that can be found in the new C30. In addition, it will feature a new safety system known as 'City Safety'. When a collision is detected between 9.3 and 18.6 mph, the system will attempt to reduce the vehicle's speed as much as possible before impact.

The XC60 is being aimed at the same young and active group of people as the C30 - those who are becoming more influential, are tech savvy and enjoy products that cater to all their needs in one attractive package.

Below the beltline, the XC60 concept shows its rugged side, with large wheels and high ground clearance, while above the beltline, it has sleek lines to look more like an elegant coupe.

"The concept car not only provides a good indication of what the production XC60 will look like, it also offers a glimpse into the future of Volvo's design language. With a more sculptured look, our cars will be more extroverted in their visual appeal," says Steve Mattin, Design Director at Volvo Cars.

The concept is powered by a 3.2-litre bio diesel engine mated to an all-wheel drive system. The engine can produce up to 265-horsepower and 251 lbs.-ft. of torque. It's the same powertrain that can be found in the 2006 S80, optimized to use E85. Top speed is approximately 228 km/h.
