Ford is showing off a concept of a modern, all-American sedan it says combines "Built Ford Tough" attitude with the sporty elegance of its 1960s' sedans.

Based on the current Ford Mustang, Interceptor features a traditional rear-wheel drive proportion that creates a short front overhang and a long rear overhang. A low roof and high beltline add to the vehicle's muscular attitude and create a sense of mystery.

"The Ford Interceptor concept is a pure sedan that speaks to performance car lovers everywhere," said Freeman Thomas, director, North American Strategic Design. "These people might need more space, but they still appreciate the power and attitude that cars like this represent,"

"The Interceptor concept is much like a Marine in dress uniform," adds Peter Horbury, executive director – Design, The Americas. "He looks smart and elegant but you can see the raw power that lies beneath."

A single character line runs the length of the body side, sloping slightly downward as it reaches the rear. This adds that illusionary "speed" wedge to the car without detracting from the smooth, clean design.

Signature Ford touches include the horizontal three-bar grille, which has been structurally integrated into the bumper beam, as well as squircles (a Ford term for square circle-shaped graphics) inside and out.

Underneath the powered clamshell "shaker" hood sits a 400-hp Ford Racing 5.0-litre Cammer V8 that runs on E85 (ethanol). An upgrade of the current Mustang 4.6 V8, this engine powered the Mustang FR500C to the 2005 Grand-Am Cup Championship in GS Class (Driver, Team and Manufacturer) in its first year of competition. Power is harnessed by a 6-speed manual gearbox with a gated shifter.

Ride and handling is entrusted to a racing-inspired front double wishbone/rear 3-link with panhard rod suspension. Interceptor rides on 22-inch wheels and, like Mustang, features a solid "live" rear axle.

The interior is thoroughly modern, in contrasting black leather and metal finishes. The dash, headliner and meaty steering wheel are leather-wrapped as are the low-back bucket seats. These feature exposed-edge seams and contrasting caramel stitching, and Ford GT-inspired squircle grommets finished with Titan Metal painted inserts.

Squircle accents are repeated in the door trims, floor, console and instrument panel (featuring an ingenious speedometer/tachometer combination whose needles move opposite each other as the speed and RPM climb).

Unique touches include retractable 4-way-adjustable headrests that deploy from the roof. The dash's control panel houses audio and climate controls that are also stowable.

"The Interceptor is about restraint – not clouding the driving experience with too much technology," Thomas said. "There aren't a lot of layers between the driver and the road with this car."

For safety, the Interceptor concept incorporates Ford's patented 4-point "belt and suspenders" safety belt design for all four seats, in addition to inflatable seat belts in the rear.

"Our customer target for this powerful masculine sedan was a man with a family," Horbury said. "He's essentially a good guy, but a bit mischievous. He loves power and performance. But ultimately, he's responsible. When he has his family on board, he values new safety technology."
