As if the Civic and Fit aren't small, sporty and fuel-conscious enough, Honda R&D Europe studio has developed a new design study model in the form of a small, sporty, fuel conscious hybrid called ... what else? ... the Honda Small Hybrid Sports Concept.

This front-wheel drive concept is powered by a Honda IMA 4-cylinder gasoline-electric hybrid system, but also has an aerodynamic design, curvaceous and contoured surfaces and sharp 'folding' edges to make it look like more than 'just another hybrid.' There's more though - the front features an accentuated, arrow-like nose with a full width air intake that sweeps forward into a distinct protruding centre section complete with Honda's 'H' logo.

The raked windshield flows into a glass roof, which itself flows rearward to give the car a fastback style. From the rear, one will notice the 'floating' LED tail light unit that stretches across the full width of the car. At its centre, the glass panel extends downwards and contains an illuminated ‘Small Hybrid Sports’ name plate. Like many concepts being released recently, Honda's uses cameras in place of typical side mirrors.

The Small Hybrid Sports Concept uses 20-inch wheels shod with 165/60R20 tires for a low rolling resistance without compromising sporty driving. The car rides on a 2,350 mm. wheelbase and sport-tuned suspension for stable and predictable handling manners.

Honda says the Small Hybrid Sports Concept is a proposal for a future hybrid model. The Concept demonstrates a unique fusion of advanced hybrid technology and fun-to-drive sports car to explore the idea that a car can have a low environmental impact yet still deliver all the driving enjoyment expected of a compact sports car.

Compact external dimensions lend themselves to nimble, agile performance on the road and help to ensure a good power to weight ratio, while a 2350 mm wheelbase in conjunction with a sports suspension, delivers stable and predictable handling characteristics.
