Hyundai is unveiling the exciting Concept Genesis, a concept car that heralds the future architecture and design of a rear-wheel drive premium sports sedan scheduled to grace the Hyundai lineup in 2008.

“Concept Genesis will extend our product range into new segments from a performance, design and packaging perspective,” said Steve Kelleher, President and CEO, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. “When it arrives in 2008 it will catapult Hyundai into competition against some highly respected rivals.”

Concept Genesis rides on a prototype of Hyundai’s all-new rear-wheel drive platform (the first such application for the North American market) to signal the beginning of premium performance within the Hyundai brand. Power comes from a newly developed V8 making the weight distribution 53:47 front-to-rear. Electronic Stability control keeps everything moving in the right direction.

ESC continually analyzes road speed, steering input, throttle position, lateral yaw rate and other factors. An onboard microprocessor determines if the vehicle is starting to understeer or oversteer, and brakes the appropriate wheels and reduce engine power to keep the vehicle on course.

Ultra high-tensile steel is used in critical areas of the unibody to provide Concept Genesis with a 12-14 percent higher dynamic torsional rigidity and a lower body-in-white weight than both the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Adding to the Concept Genesis’ performance factor is a newly developed Tau 4.6-litre V8 mated to a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC sequential shift control and a limited-slip differential. The Tau delivers well over 300 horsepower and 300 lbs.ft of torque, to launch Genesis to 60 mph in well under six seconds. The flexible design of the engine will allow for larger displacement, forced induction options and other technology enhancements in future variants.

Handling for Genesis is entrusted to a front 5-link suspension with upper and lower arms linking the front wheels to the chassis. The articulated arrangement creates a virtual axis that improves responsiveness and helps reduce kickback through the steering wheel. The 5-link independent rear setup enables an incredible level of ride and handling prowess. Speed sensitive rack and pinion steering and tabilizers front and rear (26 mm and 18 mm, respectively) round out the handling package. Driver selectable dynamic suspension settings allow tailored ride and handling characteristics according to need … or desire.

Stopping is handled by large 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). The 20-inch wheels house 12.6-inch front ventilated rotors with single-piston floating calipers up front and the 12.4-inch solid rotors with single-pistons in back.

Inside, natural materials and innovative lighting provide a well-crafted, premium design aesthetic. Among the technological features of Genesis are push-button start, heated and cooled seats, adaptive cruise control, parking assist with backup camera, electric parking brake, Bluetooth technology and an HD radio receiver in combination with an Infinity surround sound system.
