Buick has introduced a new concept at the 2007 Shanghai Motor Show which borrows from the past - by bringing back the Riviera name - while using hybrid technology that many future vehicles will see. Add in a stunning design featuring things like gullwing doors and backlit exhausts and you have a concept worth a second look.

After an eight year hiatus, GM decided to make the Buick Riviera to help communicate the company's global design vocabulary. The concept was designed - and obviously launched - in China specifically for that reason. There are even design themes used within the vehicle - such as Chinese jade stone-coloured light strips - that are inspired specifically by China.

Despite this, Buick didn't want it to be 'superficially known as a Chinese car.'

"This design was about the East and the West co-existing in harmony. We always wanted to make a global car, to take a sense of the Buick DNA and create something for the world," said James Shyr, Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center Design Director.

The three-shield Buick logo on the waterfall grille leads into a reflective strip through the hood, 'a mark of respect to the distinctive mid-hood crease prevalent in classic Buicks'. To really show off the vehicle's stunning design at night, the logo, hood strip, headlamps, side mirrors and rocker covers all have 'icy green' backlighting which light up when the sun sets.

Few details have emerged regarding what kind of engine and drivetrain the Riviera would use but the designers had plenty to talk about regarding the look of the vehicle, both inside and out.

Those working on the Riviera said that they wanted it to be something you'd want to run your hand across, rather than just look at. Like many Buicks, it's meant to be eye-catching but understated.

The 2+2 coupe opens using gullwing doors to make the vehicle look more exotic, while making ingress and egress easier. It sits on 21-inch, 10-spoke forged aluminum wheels.

The interior makes just as much use out of lighting as the exterior, combining leather bucket seats, plush carpet, creamy colours and a padded steering wheel to help describe the interior in one word - sanctuary.

"We had to have the driver feel relaxed and tranquil inside the car. We used earth and water tones and avoided hard, aggressive edges," Shyr said.

The centre console makes use of a touch pad that is loosely based on a computer mouse. An LCD screen sits at the top of the console. Otherwise, controls are kept to a minimum to avoid driver distraction according to Buick. The rear passengers even have a central armrest which can move sideways left and right to accommodate passengers of different sizes.
