Three isn't a crowd - three drew a crowd - at the Chrysler press conference at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit’s Cobo Centre. It was the last of the big automaker press conferences.

Chrysler wasted no time bringing out three brand new concepts, with one each representing one of the three different Chrysler brands – Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep.

Jeep was first, with the sporty-looking Renegade. We've heard the Renegade name before on a concept but this was something completely different. This version was described as a B-segment open-top two-seater 'ideally suited for the all-weather fun of dune-surfing or rock-crawling.' All four of Renegade's wheels are powered by their own electric motors, while a range extender in the form of a 1.5-litre Bluetec diesel engine is also fitted into the vehicle.

Next up was the Dodge ZEO (Zero Emissions Operation) a 2+2 vehicle that very much looked the part of a sporty, stylish performance car. It features massive 23-inch wheels and tires, and a Dodge crosshair grille that can light up at night. All four of its doors open upward, with the rear doors opening outward.

The ZEO is powered by an electric motor only and has an all-electric range of 400 km (250 miles) according to Dodge. This is equivalent to a miles-per-gallon rating of two litres per 100 km (120 mpg).

Lastly, the Chrysler ecoVoyager was driven out. This concept is a four-door four-seater that, like the Renegade, has a range extender, only this time it's in the form of a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. Chrysler says the ecoVoyager was aimed at people who wanted a travel experience similar to that of a Lear jet, but without all the fancy gadgetry. This concept is more about simplicity.

Chrysler also announced a new in-house organization - known as 'Envi' - that was formed late last year. The people in Envi will be tasked with establishing electric-drive vehicles and other related advanced-propulsion technologies.
