New Honda hybrid clearly Insight

Honda originated the mass-market hybrid with the Insight, and now the automaker is bringing the name back with a new gas-electric hatchback.

The automotive world will get its first look at the Insight when a concept version is introduced at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.

The five seat Insight will go on sale in the U.S. in the spring of 2009 and will use Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) gas-electric hybrid system. Honda claims that the Insight will 'represent the best value in its segment' thanks to it achieving cost reductions in IMA components.

The new Insight will share styling cues first shown on the FCX Clarity concept. Honda says that it will feature a roomy interior typical of other models currently in its lineup, and the Insight's aerodynamic shape will further help with fuel efficiency. The rear seats fold down for added versatility.

Honda expects the Insight to have global sales of 200,000 per year, with half of those occuring in North America. It will be followed up by another hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z.
