Granite expands GMC's horizons

DETROIT - GMC has long been known as the truck division at General Motors. But in the new, streamlined GM the division now is expanding its horizons.

Dave Lyon, executive director of Buick and GMC design introduced a concept vehicle at the NAIAS today that he believes will help redefine the brand.

The GMC Granite is what Lyon calls "the first urban utility vehicle – a tool for urban living neatly packaged in a utility case."

Powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission, the new Granite is 0.6 metres shorter than the Terrain compack crossover.

"We think of the Granite as the automotive equivalent of an urban loft apartment," says Lyon. "The exterior has an unmistakable industrial look, but the interior is warm and personalized" with suede-like fabric and anodized aluminum trim.

If built, it would be the smallest vehicle ever offered by GMC.
