Buick shows off

DETROIT – Buick is undergoing a transformation of its own within the new smaller General Motors.

And nothing shows that more than a concept vehicle unveiled at the NAIAS today based on the 201 Buick Regal family sedan.

The Regal GS just might be Buick’s new performance flagship.

Right now, it’s strictly a show car, but the GS look eminently buildable. Chief engineer Jim Federico says the four-door sedan is powered by a 255-hp 2.0-litre turbo four with a 6-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel drive system specially calibrated for perfotrmance.

The claimed 0-100 time is under 6.0 seconds.

Furnished with Brembo brakes for added stopping power, the GS has satin-finish chrome accents, right down to Buick’s trademark portholes.

The 2011 Regal, based on the Opel Insignia from GM Germany, will be in showrooms this spring. Enthusiasts can only hope a GS version isn’t far behind.
