Platform for a new plug-in hybrid

Honda, which has long maintained that there’s no single answer to the alternate energy debate, used the L.A. Auto Show to unveil a Fit EV concept and the platform for a new plug-in hybrid.

Fit will have a production version and the platform will have a test version ready in 2012.

The Fit EV will go about 160-km using a 3-mode electric drive system, adapted from the 2011 CR-Z hybrid. Battery recharging takes less than 12 hours with a conventional 120-volt outlet, and under six hours with a 240-volt outlet.

The plug-in hybrid platform uses a two-motor hybrid system integrated into a mid-size sedan platform.

It will allow short, frequent trips in all-electric mode and provide long-distance driving capability when needed. The all-electric mode will have a range of 15- 25 km (in city driving) and a top speed of about 100 km/h. A full recharge will take 2 to 2.5 hours using a 120-volt outlet and 1 to 1.5 hours using a 240-volt outlet.

The vehicle can also run in a gasoline-electric hybrid mode with a 2.0-litre engine.
