GMC concept tackles tough terrain

The GMC Sierra All Terrain HD concept is GM’s exploration of the possibilities of its recently introduced 2011 Sierra HD heavy duty pickup.

The bold exterior design, enhanced all-terrain suspension and premium details expected from a GMC all point toward greater access to off-road destinations in comfort and luxury. Among the notable changes are increased ground clearance (by 76mm or about three inches), increased angles of approach and departure (due to the shorter overall length that brings the wheels closer to the ends of the truck), a wider track (of over 100 mm or four inches, for better stability) and full underbody protection.

The concept modifies the four-wheel drive chassis of the 2011 Sierra HD Crew Cab/short box pickup powered by the 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel V8, controlled by the Allison 1000 six-speed transmission.

Payload and trailering abilities are maintained (1,225 kg or 2,700 lbs. payload; 5,896kg or 13,000 lbs. towing; 7,076 kg or 15,600 lbs. with a fifth wheel), and there are a couple convenience items included in the pickup that may end up in production models.

At the rear, the cargo box features lockable, lighted storage compartments (including a couple with 110-volt power outlet and air compressor) and several tie-down cleats, including a pair in the bed floor and two on each side of the bed. A non-slip rubber pad on the tailgate and a composite bed liner with a unique “circuit board” pattern provide protective coverings. Motorized, deployable assist steps provide easy access to the cab and bed without reducing ground clearance.

The All Terrain Concept rides on 35-inch-tall BFGoodrich KM2 “mud terrain” tires mounted on 20-inch machined aluminum wheels. The combination of satin chrome and anodized aluminum finish provides a premium appearance without sacrificing durability.

Specialized Fox off-road shocks created with specific valving especially for the concept pickup add additional compression damping and more controlled rebound, which helps increase control, stability and handling in tough terrain. Visible, remote fluid reservoirs – connected to the shock bodies via custom hoses – are mounted in the wheel house liners and are matched with front and rear jounce shocks. For crawling in rocky terrain, the front stabilizer bar can be disconnected electronically at the push of a button in the cabin.

Full composite underbody protection shields the All Terrain HD’s transmission, drivetrain, fuel tank, exhaust system and axle differentials.

As with the production 2011 GMC Sierra HD pickup, power is provided by the 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel V8 linked to the Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission. Although it puts out 397 horsepower and 765 lb.-ft. of torque, it is 11% more economical than previous versions and reduces emissions by some 63%. It also has a “smart” exhaust brake feature for controlled descents without brakes.

Lighting solutions include high-intensity LED headlights, fog lights, taillights turn signal and parking lights all mounted by impact resistant composite housings, as well as high mounted flood lights for the cargo bed and assist steps.

Enhanced lighting also accents the interior done up in premium appointments and upscale trim, including carbon-fibre look leather seating and leather trim on the steering wheel, instrument panel and center console. The navigation/radio system previews future GMC product. It includes an 80gig hard drive and has up to 20 minutes of record/playback capability from AM/FM/satellite radio stations.

It’s the ultimate professional-grade tool for construction crews, ranchers and adventurers whose activities aren’t limited by where the pavement ends. Although it is a concept, it’s a pretty realistic one.”
