EVOS points to future Ford look

Ford is introducing a concept fastback at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, saying it points the way to the new global face of Ford and promising the new look will make it to a production vehicle around the beginning of 2012 (likely on the new Mondeo due to make an appearance in 2012 as a 2013 model, and which will also give life to a new Fusion).

Among the styling cues highlighted by Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development, are narrower headlights and a reworking of the current Ford trapezoid grille opening that features prominently on the new Focus (making it narrower and wider, and moving it up above the bumper).

The other EVOS factor that will influence production vehicles is technology, with Ford stating that Cloud computing would play a major part in the future of Sync.

“We see technology as more than just an impressive list of microprocessors, sensors and software; it’s about the application of that technology to create an experience that enhances the driver’s time behind the wheel,” said Paul Mascarenas, chief technical officer and vice president of Ford Research and Innovation. “The possibilities are fascinating when we explore how to enable a seamless lifestyle between home, office and car linked by access to the driver’s personal information.”

With information from the cloud, EVOS gets to know the driver and provides the same level of connectivity he/she would have at home or the office. It can also access things like work schedules and appointments and issue reminders as well as program routes to the meeting destination (taking into account weather and traffic conditions received from other cloud services), as well as continue the content that was being viewed or streamed on the home or office computer. For the truly connected home, the car could automatically switch on/off lights within a set distance, close the garage door when the car pulls away, or open the compound gates, when it arrives.

It will feature the first integrated application of the Ford wellness monitoring system (which can monitor heart rate or allergens, for example).

EVOS also learns from driver behaviour to always provide the appealing level of power, handling and comfort for a truly dynamic driving experience. EVOS uses a hybrid powertrain, which uses cloud computing to vary the most efficient power delivery between the electric motor and gasoline engine, based on driver behaviour and road and weather conditions. This would be especially helpful in certain large cities that have emissions restrictions according to region, allowing EVOS to go where its driver needs to go without restriction.

The gull wing doors – all four of them that practically open up the entire cabin – are not expected to make it to production, but hey … everybody goes gaga over gull wing doors.
