Car Research

For the extrovert - There's not many vehicles that are as in-your-face as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren roadster. People will hear the 626-horsepower engine coming; they'll gawk at the long hood as it rolls up; and they'll gasp at the awesome scissor doors that open toward the sky. This convertible doesn't for a second pretend to be anything short of completely ostentatious.

For the hangers-on - There are a lot of retro cars making a comeback nowadays but Challenger fans are some of the most loyal and fanatical. Not only that, but many critics agree that Dodge did a fantastic job of updating its new muscle car while still keeping several cues from the original in tact.

For the adventurous - GMC's Yukon Hybrid fits the bill in many ways. It's a rugged beast of an SUV that holds up to eight passengers, uses a big 6.0-litre V8 Vortec engine and has an interior that still knows how to coddle its occupants. But the kicker here is that it gets good fuel economy numbers, so you don't have to feel guilty about going on your adventures.

For the curious - The Nissan Cube is unlike anything else on the road right now. It's unmistakeable with its wraparound rear window and quirky shape, while inside it has all sorts of neat features, from optional bungee cords to hold loose items in place, to a dash-mounted shag rug for ... well, just because.

For the eco-friendly driver - Was there any doubt Toyota's famous hybrid would be the answer for drivers who want to do their best to limit their footprint on the environment? This partial-zero emissions hatchback sips fuel at a glacial pace, and the 2010 model has all kinds of fancy features to make it more eco-friendly, including solar panels on the roof that help power the air conditioning system.

For the eco-friendly driver who still loves to go fast - The Fisker Karma not only goes faster than the Prius, - a lot faster - it also emits less carbon dioxide. Try zero emissions when it runs in Stealth mode (read: electric-only). Of course, you can get a brand new Corolla for a little over $15,000, while a Karma costs about $90,000 US.

For the high-strung - The Bugatti Veyron exists to satisfy even those drivers who have a seemingly insatiable need for speed, power ... and more power. Only a lucky few people will get to own one of these 1,001-horsepower (yes, you read that right) machines every year. You may want to try your luck hanging off the wing of a jet instead.

For the introvert - If you're a driver, there's a good chance you pass about a thousand Corollas each and every day. And whether it's a 1998 model or a 2010 model, chances are you'll barely bat an eye at any of 'em. With all due respect, they're handsome cars that have one of the best reputations in the business because of how reliable they are, but they're definitely not for the person seeking attention.

For the supremely confident person - That is, the supremely confident person who is convinced a hot car will get him (or her!) a chance to talk to someone of the opposite sex. You don't have to be a car nut to know that Aston Martin's V12 Vantage is absolutely gorgeous, and though we hate to sound shallow, we'd totally give a Vantage owner the time of day.

For the animal lover - Honda showed off a very dog-friendly element in 2009 that is sure to appeal to anyone who owns a canine. The very size of the Element lends itself to carrying large objects, but the dog-friendly SUV includes a cushioned bed with an elevated platform, an extendable cargo-area load-in ramp, and a spill-resistant water bowl among other things. Awesome!
