Audi Q5
Chances of winning: Better than good. Its biggest competitor can be found on the next slide in this gallery - the BMW X1. Both sit in a segment that is currently very popular (the small-ute) and the Q5 is as stylish and fun as they come. Audi is no stranger to this competition either, winning several times since the first WCOTY in 2006, which it won with the A6. Verdict: Should be at the top of the list.

BMW X1
Chances of winning: Good. Like all BMWs, the X1 has the whole 'performance' thing down pat. But we still feel like the Q5 has the edge over it when considering small European SUVs on this list.Verdict: It offers a lot of variety in different countries around the world, but so does the Q5. Our gut says the X1 won't be the eventual winner.

Chevrolet Cruze
Chances of winning: Great! The re-invigorated General Motors is all about global cars these days, and the Cruze certainly falls in that category, being sold in Asia and Europe currently before launching in North America later in 2010. It's combination of style and fuel-efficient engines may very well earn it a Car of the Year nod. Verdict: Something tells us this is the dark horse of the competition, and could very well reign supreme.

Kia Soul
Chances of winning: It's great to see one of Kia's wonderful new models on the 2010 Car of the Year list, but as much as we like the Soul, it's not likely to be on the winner's podium when the vosts are counted. Verdict: Quite frankly, there are better compact cars on this list, so despite being a funky little entry here, the Soul's chances look slim.

Mazda3
Chances of winning: Quite good. The Mazda3 has been selling like hotcakes since its inception in the 2004 model year, and for good reason. Pricing considered, it's one of the most stylish, well-made, fun vehicles a person could own. The second generation version is no exception, which is why we see it as such a strong favourite. Verdict: It would be a surprise if the Mazda3 wasn't at least in the top three once the final votes are tallied.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Chances of winning: Strong. The E-Class is a world-renowned vehicle that's been around for many years. Its diesel variant won the World Green Car of the Year in 2007 so it's no stranger to this competition. Each new generation E-Class pushes the envelope even more, with the 2010 version truly earning the right to don the 'E' name. Verdict: With direct competitors from BMW and Audi nowhere to be found, this could very well be the year of the E-Class.

Porsche Panamera
Chances of winning: Good, but not great. The Panamera is certainly a world-class car, and one that deserves the Porsche name, but price and fuel economy could hurt its chances, not to mention its love-it-or-hate-it styling. Verdict: A fun vehicle to drive, and in many ways a huge success for the German automaker, but it's unlikely the Panamera will take the ultimate prize for 2010.

Toyota Prius
Chances of winning: Not very good. Like every vehicle on this list, the Prius is a deserving entry, chalk full of advanced technology and a fanatical following. That being said, there's already a World Green Car of the Year category. Great fuel economy isn't enough to set this vehicle apart from others on this list. Verdict: There's nothing wrong with the Prius (and there's a lot right!), but it likely won't win the top prize.

Volkswagen Polo
Chances of winning: Very good. Could this be the first back-to-back win for an automaker in the short history of the WCOTY competition? The superb Golf Mk VI took 2009's top award, and the smaller (but just as stylish) Polo could easily make it two years running for Volkswagen. Verdict: It's in tough against bigger global players that are getting a lot more attention, but with some luck on its side, the Polo may just win the whole competition in 2010.

Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, Buick Regal
Chances of winning: Something tells us that with the Cruze already in the mix, the Insignia/Regal won't be the first thing that comes to voters' minds when it's time to pick the World Car of the Year. The styling is great and both the Insignia and Regal names are well known around the world, but we wouldn't bet our hard-earned money on it. Verdict: A longshot.
