Siemoneit Racing's gem

Black pearls are some of the rarest undersea gems one can buy. But, if you’re a modern Jack Sparrow looking for a hip ride to match your hipster style and eccentric ways, Siemoneit Racing has a pearl-of-a-ride you might like.

The Volkswagen engine tuning specialist from Stade, Germany, near Hamburg, has taken the VW Golf R 20 and squeezed out more power and torque, better performance and sportier driving dynamics via purely electronic modifications to the engine and DSG control modules.

At stage one, horsepower rises from 270 to roughly 300 hp with torque going from 258 to 295 lb.-ft. with high test (98 octane) fuel. Quicker, more intelligent gear changes and fuel-efficient shift points on the latest generation of DSG and S-Tronic automatic gearboxes mean more guilt-free fun for Golf R owners.

Over and above the engine and gearbox tweaks, stage two affords the Golf’s turbocharged 2.0-litre engine another 20 hp and 37 lb.-ft. by adding a 76mm down-pipe and 100 cpi metal catalytic converter. We have 290 horses and 332 all-wheel torques, but aren’t done yet.

To squeeze every last drop of performance potential (without tearing apart and completely rebuilding the engine, of course) Siemoneit Racing stages a third round of bolt-ons engineered specifically for this application. There’s a cold air intake and larger intercooler for more efficient combustion, a high-flow fuel pump and uprated spark plugs for more robust delivery and vaporization, plus an exhaust developed in-house to bring the new electronics up to performance and rpm ranges that are not possible with the series production equipment.

Developed for applications with over 500 horsepower, the SR20.500.1 marine quality stainless steel turbo-back exhaust blows straight through a 100 (or 200) cpi metal cat to the twin 90mm outlets. With more custom engine and gearbox programming, stage three offers in the area of 365 hp and 358 pounds of twist, for a little more than 12 grand (8,998 Euro) plus install.

But, this isn’t even the end of the story. In fact, with some different hardware mods and a few extra keystrokes, Siemoneit can convert the Golf R20 into a 530 hp monster with faster acceleration, super-rapid gear changes and even more fun at the wheel thanks to new programming.

Siemoneit Racing can also program modifications to the launch control, rev limiter and torque limiter functions on Volkswagen and Audi DSG and S-Tronic systems where gear shift points, gear shift times and numerous other settings can be altered for a personalized improvement in performance.

Even at stage three, the net result is a Golf R that will turn the face of many supercar owners, who upon seeing the carbon fibre hood and pearl black-painted factory grilles and wheels, will chuckle, boast perhaps, and then get smoked by a genuine black pearl sleeper.

When the Golf R finally does arrive in Canada (in about a year), hopefully the parts will be available for our own domestic consumption. If not there could be mutiny for the Black Pearl.
