Hoping to light the way to a bright future, Volkswagen has introduced the Eos concept convertible for 2006.

The Eos - named after the goddess of the dawn - will carry two engine types in the U.S. The first is a 2.0-litre, 200-horsepower 4-cylinder and the other is a 3.2-litre, 250-horsepower V6.

The Eos is the world's first four-seater car with a five-section coupe/sunroof/convertible top. The roof features full glass/sliding/tilting capabilities and takes about 25 seconds from open to close and vice versa. Its dimensions are 70.5 inches wide, 173.6 inches long and 56.8 inches high. It also has a large track width of 60.8 inches, which helps contribute to its agility and safe handling characteristics.

The body was developed as its own new coupe/cabriolet - it wasn't based on an existing closed-top model. Some of its technology was based on the Passat, according to Volkswagen.

The interior, though it will have similar features reminiscent of other Volkswagens, will also include new additions such as front and rear memory seats that will adjust to each setting at the touch of a button. The cockpit, the door and side trim panels and the rear seat system are new developments to the Eos as well

The vehicle will be launched in one trim level which includes the following standard equipment: ESP, safety-optimised front headrests, front airbags and specially developed side head-thorax airbags; 16" alloy wheels 17, air conditioning system, fog lights, power windows and ambient lighting. Optionally, innovative features such as a Dynaudio sound system with ten-channel amplifier, ten loudspeakers and 600 W output power or bi-xenon headlights with dynamic and static cornering lights will be available.

Safety-wise, the convertible also gets a rollover protection system which shoots out within a minimum of 0.25 seconds in the event of a collision.

The Eos will be positioned in Volkswagen's model range between the Golf and the Passat and will be launched in Europe in the spring of 2006.
