Audi has named its new sports coupe the R8, and it will be going into production in late 2006 for release in the second quarter of 2007.

The R8 will be based on the LeMans Quattro concept that appeared at the Frankfurt Auto Show two years ago. It will be built at Audi's plant in Neckarsulm and testing is being conducted at the moment by Audi's subsidiary quattro GmbH.

"Through the R8 we are looking to build on our successes in motorsport and carry them over to series production. This model represents Audi's very own interpretation of sportiness," says Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of AUDI AG, about the new member of the Audi model range.

Audi says it's aiming for lightweight design on the R8. The Audi A2, A6 and A8 were designed at the Neckarsulm Aluminum Centre using lightweight design technology.
