Making the move from Europe across the Atlantic ocean, the Suzuki SX4 will hit the United States for the 2007 model year.

Suzuki grows its lineup by going small with the SX4 five-door hatchback, which comes with standard all-wheel drive.

Engine specifications aren't set in stone yet but preliminary specs put the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder DOHC engine producing 143-horsepower and 136 lbs.-ft. of torque.

The SX4, which gets its name from the words Sport X-over and 4 seasons of weather, was built to have excellent year-round driveability in any driving conditions. The body and chassis of the SX4 evolved from the Suzuki Swift. It features a steel unibody for high body rigidity and reinforced suspension mounts. A wide track combined with available 16" wheels and tires make for a solid ride.

The intelligent all-wheel drive system (i-AWD) has three modes, controlled via a console-mounted switch. The three modes are 2WD, AWD auto mode which controls the power directed to the rear wheels, and AWD Lock mode which distributes power to the rear wheels from 30%-50%. When the vehicle reaches 36 mph in Lock mode, it automatically switches to AWD Auto mode.

The interior of the SX4 features cloth materials on the seats highlighted by metallic coloured accents for a refined, aggressive look. The centre stack features an audio system with standard AM/FM/MP3 CD player with four speakers or an upgraded Premium package which adds an in-dash six-disc CD changer and two speakers for a total of six, plus subwoofer. A fully-automatic climate control system is also available. The SX4 seats five, with theatre-style 60/40 split rear seats. All seats feature bottle holders and storage pockets.

Standard safety features found on the SX4 include four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system and six airbags (driver and front passenger front airbags, driver and front passenger side impact airbags, and side curtain airbags).

The Suzuki SX4 will go on sale in the third quarter of 2006 and will be built in Japan.
