Chrysler unveiled its first-ever sport utility vehicle at the 2006 North American International Auto Show and jumps headfirst into the segment thanks in no small part to an available Hemi engine that gives the Aspen the most power in its class.

The Chrysler Aspen features all kinds of amenities including a chrome grille, available 20-inch chrome wheels, the aforementioned 5.7-litre Hemi V8 engine, seating for up to eight, remote start, rear-seat DVD entertainment system and rear park assist.

Though the Aspen has the most horsepower, torque and interior space of any SUV in its segment, it still features fuel-saving devices such as a multi-displacement system, which shuts off four of the eight cylinders in either Hemi-powered engine when full power isn't needed.

In addition to all this, there are two different 4x4 systems available in the Aspen. A single-speed transfer case is standard with 4x4 models that feature the 4.7-liter V-8 engine. The single-speed transfer case provides all-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel-drive "high" operating modes.

A two-speed transfer case is standard with 4x4 models that feature the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine. Chrysler Aspen's two-speed transfer case features an all-wheel-drive (AWD) mode and four-wheel-drive "high" and "low" modes. Both transfer cases feature a 48/52 torque split between front and rear axles when AWD mode is selected.

There are even some features on the Aspen that are usually left for luxury vehicles, such as a one-touch lane change feature, where the driver can quickly activate a three-blink turn signal when changing lanes.

In terms of safety, the Aspen includes electronic stability program, electronic roll mitigation, tire pressure monitoring system and side curtain air bags for all three rows of seating.

Chrysler says that it drew inspiration from the 300 sedan and Crossfire sports car for the design of the Aspen, such as the chrome grille and scultped hood. More chrome can be found on body-side moldings, door handles, side mirrors, belt molding and roof rack.

Inside, the Aspen features room for eight and includes Chrysler's signature analog clock, white-faced gauges with chrome trim, and an available full-screen navigation radio. The second row of seats can be either 40/20/40 split or heated bucket seats.

Aspen will be fitted with a 5.7-litre V8 Hemi engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission and has an estimated fuel economy of 16.5 L/100 km city and 11.2 L/100 km highway. It will also include standard side-curtain air bags, 20-inch chromed wheels, leather heated front and second row seats, power driver and front passenger seats, three passenger 60/40 third-row seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with remote audio controls, memory system (seats, mirrors, radio and temperature), dual-zone automatic temperature control, power adjustable pedals, sun roof, auto headlamps, fog lamps, LED interior lighting, express-up/down front windows, full-size spare tire, 6x9-inch heated mirrors, engine immobilizer, security alarm, running boards, power liftgate and rear back-up system.

The Aspen 4x4 Limited version starts at $49,995. Optional add-ons include skid plates, Sirius satellite radio, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, UConnect hands-free communication system, navigation system, remote start and a trailer tow package with towing capacity of 3969 kg (8750 lbs).
