It wasn't exactly a speedy process, but Mazda Canada has announced final pricing and horsepower numbers for the new 2007 Mazdaspeed3 hatchback.

The new upgraded front-wheel drive car will start at $30,995. Its 2.3-litre DSI turbocharged engine will produce 263-horsepower (at 5,500 rpm) and 280 lbs.-ft. of torque (at 3,000 rpm).

The engine will be mated to the same six-speed manual transmission that can found in the Mazdaspeed6 sedan. The rigidity of the Mazdaspeed3's body has been increased so as to keep up with the demands of more spirited sport driving. Body rigidity has been increased in a few ways, such as using a reinforced front cowl member that is joined directly to a plate in the top section of the front damper mount. This prevents the deformation of the front suspension tower and maintains correct suspension geometry. At the rear, the gusset introduced at the bottom end of the rear suspension towers restrains the tendency of the towers to displace inwards and it results in the correct suspension geometry in the rear.

The suspension gets a special sport tuning and both the MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension have higher coil spring rates and larger diameter stabilizer bars than on the Mazda3. This gives the Mazdaspeed3 up to 60% improved roll stiffness.

The exterior of the hatchback is meant to convey the vehicle's athleticism, while still showing simplicity and refinement, examples being the flared fenders (which are 20 mm wider than the regular Mazda3) and the strong edges on the hood. It also gets 18-inch, 10-spoke aluminum wheels, side skirts, a large tailpipe and a roof spoiler with integrated brake lights.

The interior is set in black cloth, with red stitching on the seats, shifter and steering wheel. The Mazdaspeed3 also gets aluminum pedals and stainless steel scuff plates.

Standard safety equipment includes 4-wheel disc brakes, anti-lock brakes, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with an engine torque control function. A collapsible brake pedal and revised steering column structure reduce the risk of injury to the driver's lower legs.
