Volvo added a V8 to its big XC90 SUV in 2006. Now, for 2007, the turbocharged 5-cylinder engine gets the heave-ho and a new inline six joins the V8.

The new engine produces 235-horsepower (compared to the 5's 208-horsepower) and 236 lb.-ft. of torque and Volvo promises that it has incorporated the latest technology to maintain the same exterior dimensions and fuel consumption as a 5-cylinder.

The XC90 receives more visual changes for 2007, including a new grille with more chrome and bumpers, redesigned tail lamps and reflectors in the bumper that are recessed within chrome trim surroundings.

All versions of the XC90 now have body-colour side trim mouldings and door handles. The door mirrors are body-coloured and now feature built-in turn indicator repeaters. A new turn indicator function is also being introduced that can be found on several other luxury European vehicles: a quick push on the indicator stalk flashes the turn indicator three times to indicate a lane change.

In addition, two new body colours have been added - Electric Silver metallic and the XC90-unique Shadow Blue - and 18-inch aluminum wheels (which feature the Volvo emblem in the centre) are optional. Brushed aluminum roof rails are now standard on all V8 XC90s.

Inside, the XC90 gets its share of changes as well. A new centre console display was added for 2007 and the SUV gets some S60 R and V70 R influence with an instrument panel that gets a watch-dial inspired design.

Safety is still a huge factor for Volvo and the new XC90 gets the full treatment for 2007. The active Bi-Xenon headlamps turn up to 15 degrees when going around corners, illuminating the curve of the road. To conserve power, this system is automatically disabled in daylight.

The Blind Spot Information System uses cameras that are integrated into the door mirrors to alert the driver when their is someone in his or her blind spot. When a vehicle enters a blind spot, a light is illuminated in the relevant mirror to alert the driver.

A park-assist rear camera has also been added in 2007 to help aid with parking and to alert the driver if someone is standing behind the vehicle.

The 2007 XC90 will be released in Canada in the Summer of 2006.
