Jeep continues its expansion with the all-new 2007 Patriot compact sport-utility vehicle (SUV), a new entry-level vehicle for the Jeep lineup.

Based on the concept introduced at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 2007 Jeep Patriot is a modern interpretation of traditional Jeep styling. Jeep claims Patriot combines the packaging and interior flexibility of an SUV with the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a compact car or small pickup.

It is available either in front-wheel drive, or with a choice of two full-time, 4-wheel-drive systems (one with Lock mode, the other with low range) called Freedom Drive I and II, respectively. The global vehicle is available in either left- or right-hand drive models.

Recommended for daily use, including driving in snow and rain, Freedom Drive I features a lockable centre coupling, giving drivers the ability to put the Jeep Patriot in four-wheel-drive Lock mode to handle deeper snow, sand and other low-traction surfaces.

The Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package includes a second-generation continuously variable transaxle with a low range (CVT2L) that engages when the off-road mode is activated, 17-inch all-terrain tires and aluminum wheels, a full-size spare tire, air-filtration system, skid plates, tow hooks, fog lamps and seat height adjuster. The package is recommended for off-road situations that include steep grades, wheel lift and rock or log climbing.

Off-road Brake Traction Control maintains forward mobility during heavy articulation or on split-friction surfaces where one wheel loses traction. Hill-Descent Control modulates brake hydraulic pressure without driver intervention for downhill assistance at a safe and controlled rate of speed. Stability control (ESP) and off-road anti-lock brakes (ABS) also add to the Patriot's off-road capability.

All Patriot models come standard with Brake Traction Control, three-mode ESP, Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation and anti-lock brakes with rough-road detection. Patriot's standard 4-wheel anti-lock brakes will haul the vehicle to a standstill from 60 mph in 134 feet (on dry pavement).

The Trail Rated Jeep Patriot features nine inches of ground clearance, a 29-degree approach angle, a 33-degree departure angle and a 23-degree breakover angle. This version of the Patriot also has additional body sealing and high-mounted drivetrain vents to support 19-inch water fording capability.

Inside, command-of-the-road seating position gives drivers an added feeling of control. Standard 60/40 rear seats fold flat to expand the cargo space to 54.2 cubic feet. The cargo area can expand to upwards of 62 cubic feet with an available flat-folding front passenger seat.

Clever touches include an optional 9-speaker Boston Acoustics Premium Sound Group that features two articulating speakers that swing down to face rearward when the tailgate is open, and an optional dual purpose, self-recharging headliner cargo lamp that can snap out to serve as a flashlight.

Both Patriot and Patriot Limited models are powered by a 172-hp 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts, which helps optimize the torque curve at all speeds and produces more power, better fuel economy and smoother, quieter operation. The standard transmission is a 5-speed manual, with a CVT optional. A 2.0-litre turbo diesel is available outside North America.

Standard equipment includes side-curtain air bags, Sentry Key theft-deterrent system, Vinyl Tech seats, tilt steering wheel and a center console sliding armrest that moves forward 3 inches to accommodate shorter drivers. The armrest lid features a unique flip pocket for storing a cell phone or an MP3 player. Standard exterior appointments include roof rails, 16-inch styled steel wheels and all-season tires.

Limited models add air conditioning, power windows with driver one-touch down feature, power locks with remote keyless entry, power fold-away mirrors, fold-flat front passenger seat, height adjustable driver's seat, speed control, premium cloth low-back bucket seats with easy-care YES Essentials fabric, fog lamps, auto-dimming rear-view mirrors and tire pressure monitoring system. 17-inch aluminum wheels and all-season touring tires differentiate the exterior.

Among the options are seat-mounted side air bags, leather seating, 6-disc CD player, satellite radio, UConnect hands-free communication system, all-terrain tires, power sunroof, heated front seats and trailer tow package.
