Infiniti has taken the wraps off of its new 2007 G35 sedan, which features an evolution of its predecessor's sporty exterior styling, a redesigned interior and an enhanced engine that will produce an estimated 300+ horsepower.

The second-generation G sedan gets all kinds of new features for 2007, including a touch navigation screen with real-time traffic updates and the available Infiniti Studio on Wheels by Bose, which combines the industry's first 3-way front door speaker array using 10-inch woofers with an audiophile quality head unit.

Designers state that the new G35 is more lean and athletic than the outgoing model, as well as more detailed and polished. It still has the long, wave-like hood, pushed back A-pillars and athletic stance but includes new L-shaped headlights and sculpted horizontal blades on the grille that were inspired by traditional Japanese swords. High intensity discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlamps are standard on all G35s and adaptive headlights that turn with the direction of the steering wheel are optional.

The rear features larger L-shaped LED taillights which express Infiniti's new design identity, an integrated spoiler and dual exhaust pipes to help accentuate the car's sporty appearance. The G35 Sport model offers unique front fascia and side sills as well as standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels (other version come standards with 17-inch wheels).

The interior features modern technology combined with traditional Japanese design cues. The instrument panel features gauges that have new white-and-violet illumination, with the white providing the most important information. The violet, which is a traditional Japanese representation of loyaly, is used as an accent colour. A center info display sits in between the speedometer and tachometer, and shows such information as average fuel consumption, average speed, elapsed time, running distance, distance to empty and outside air temperature, warning displays, odometer and automatic transmission shift indicator. This is shown with red illumination.

Another Japanese-style detail is the 'Washi'-style textured aluminum-alloy accents. Washi is a form of elegant, handmade Japanese paper. Each G steering wheel is hand-stitched and comes standard with cruise-control and audio switches. G35 sport models with automatic transmission also include steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

All 2007 G35s comes standard with leather seats. For those who prefer it, real wood accents are available in place of the Washi-style aluminum trim.

The new G35 houses the fourth-generation of the VQ-series V6 engine. It has several enhancements this year, including standard variable exhaust cam timing, a higher rev limit (increased from 6,600 rpm to 7,500 rpm) and higher compression ratio (10.6:1 versus the previous 10.3:1), asymmetric piston skirts, twin knock sensors, improved coolant flow and new Iridium spark plugs. These and other enhancements are expected to make for improved emissions and fuel economy. The exhaust has also been tuned for an 'authoritative' harmony according to Infiniti.

"There are a couple of unique features you notice about this new generation VQ engine – first, the great engine sound and the absence of the usual engine rough noises and vibrations," aid Mark Igo, vice president and general manager, Infiniti. "And secondly, the tuning strategy that is not strictly about standing-start acceleration, but a more refined balance of quick acceleration that builds continuously to the redline. It's a deepening pleasure that keeps getting better as you drive."

The V6 in the G35 is once again mated to either a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode or a 6-speed manual. The 2007 G is built on the racing technology-inspired FM platform (the same that the Infiniti M sedan uses). This platform locates the engine behind the front axle in the "front mid-ship" position, allowing for excellent front-to-rear weight balance.

An all-wheel drive G35x is once again available, which utilizes an active torque distribution management system with an active center clutch designed for smooth starts and better traction and maneuverability on snowy roads. Both all-wheel and rear-wheel drive G35s come standard with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), a 4-sensor anti-lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution. A Viscous Limited Slip Differential (VLSD) is standard on Sport models.

All G35s come equipped with the Advanced Air Bag System with dual-stage supplemental air bags with seat belt sensors and occupant classification sensor, front-seat side-impact supplemental air bags and roof-mounted side-impact curtain air bags for front- and rear-seat occupant head protection.

Five models are available in 2007 - G35, G35 Journey, G35x AWD, G35 Sport and G35 Sport 6MT. Available option packages include a Premium Package, sunroof, satellite radio (choice of XM or Sirius), Navigation Package and Technology Package.
