Honda introduced the all-new 2007 Acura RDX Entry Premium SUV at the 2006 New York International Auto Show, showcasing Acura's first-ever turbocharged engine with its break-through Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system (SH-AWD) system.

RDX is targeted at young professionals with active and engaging lifestyles who desire stylish vehicles that offer higher "eye-points" (driving position) and more cargo flexibility than traditionally offered by sedans, but who don't want to give up the style, handling and performance of luxury sports sedans.

Built on a new global light truck platform, RDX features the first adaptation of Acura's SH-AWD system on an SUV as well as Acura's first standard 18-inch wheel fitment.

As Acura's first Entry Premium SUV, the RDX was the focal point of the development of a special powertrain that would effectively blend 4-cylinder efficiency with 6-cylinder power. The ideal solution came in the form of an innovative new variable flow turbo (VFT) that delivers an unusually broad powerband with little or no lag in throttle response.

RDX is equipped with an all-new turbocharged 2.3-litre DOHC 16-valve in-line 4-cylinder engine that combines Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) with Variable Timing Control (VTC). With a variable flow turbo (VFT) that delivers an unusually broad powerband with little or no lag in throttle response, RDX delivers strong power outputs (240 hp and 260 lbs.ft of torque, respectively), good fuel economy (estimated at 12.4 litres per 100 km in the city, 9.8 on the highway) and low emissions. Power delivery to all four wheels is entrusted to a standard 5-speed automatic with Sequential SportShift. Electronically controlled drive-by-wire throttle control is also standard.

Un-SUV-like handling is aided by a fully independent front MacPherson strut and rear trailing arm-type multilink rear suspension setup tuned for compliant control, and assisted with front and rear anti-roll bars. Standard Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control further enhances control and all-surface grip.

The RDX's unique rear hatch features a replaceable panel to reduce the cost of accident repair in the event of rear-end collisions.

Inside the RDX, a 60/40 split-folding 3-passenger rear seat can expand cargo capacity to a total of 60.6 cubic feet. Multiple interior storage compartments positioned throughout the interior, including a large (and lockable) dual-level center console located between the front seats, accommodate a variety of nick-nack sizes up to a briefcase.

Standards include a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a Multi-Information Display (MID), LED backlit gauges, 360-watt 7-speaker premium sound system with multi-format 6-disc changer and an MP3/auxiliary input jack for easily connecting audio devices such as an Apple iPod.

A Technology Package upgrades the interior ambience to a 410-watt 10-speaker Acura/ELS Surround Premium Sound System that can deliver up to eight discreet audio channels (instead of the usual two) for a dynamic listening experience. A HandsFreeLink works with many Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and the Acura Navigation System with Bi-lingual Voice Recognition.

Passive safety features include the latest generation of dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags for the driver and front passenger, side-impact airbags for driver and front passenger, and side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor for all outboard occupants.
