Coinciding with the recent debut of the new 2007 Lexus LS460 and LS460 L, the company has unveiled the 2008 Lexus LS600h L, which features the world's first full hybrid V8 powertrain.

It may be a hybrid, but the LS600h L has a monster power output of 430-horsepower when factoring in the gasoline-engine, high-output electric motors and large-capacity battery pack. This powertrain is combined with an all-wheel drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

According to Lexus, 'quiet of ride' is one of the top five reasons for buying a luxury vehicle, therefore, extensive re-engineering of accessory motors and switches was necessary to keep the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) of the LS600h L at low levels. The company says that NVH levels in it are about half that of conventional vehicles, making it one of the quietest cars ever built. An air suspension system equipped with Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) will be standard on the LS 600h L.

The engine fitted in the LS600h L is a 4.6-litre V8 that produces approximately 380-horsepower and 370 lbs.-ft. of torque. The vehicle will travel from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

It also features an advanced precollision system (APCS) that helps warn the driver of an impending collision with a pedestrian. Two cameras are mounted at the front of the car in conjunction with millimeter-wave radar to detect large metal obstructions such as cars, as well as smaller non-metallic objects such as humans. A third camera is mounted on the steering column. It senses when a driver isn't looking directly ahead for a few seconds and if an obstacle is detected ahead, a warning bell chimes and a light flashes. If the car gets closer to the obstacle, pressure is automatically applied to the brakes and the steering ratio becomes amplified so any sharp steering manouvers will be enhanced. Last, while this is all happening, the seatbelt tightens around the driver and the brake system is prepared to respond with full force if and when it is activated by the driver.

In terms of styling, the LS600h features Lexus' new L-Finesse design language which has already been added to the new IS, ES and GS sedans.

Of interest to prospective buyers of course is the premium appointments. The long wheelbase version of the LS600h adds five inches of additional rear legroom. Rear passengers also get, depending on options, a four-zone front and rear A/C with air purification, rear-door power sunshades and rear power headrests, a fixed rear console and fold-out table and a right rear-seat 45-degree recliner with footrest and multifunction massage.

Other amenities include a voice-activated hard disk drive, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with 9-inch drop-down screen, a 450-watt, 19-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound audio system, LED headlights for nighttime and low-beam use and a parallel-park assist function which automatically parallel parks the vehicle for the driver; all the driver has to do is assist with some braking.

The LS600h will be built at Toyota's Tahara, Japan plant.
