DaimlerChrysler has announced plans for its first diesel-powered, full-size sport-utility vehicle (SUV) offered in Canada and the US. The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3.0-litre common rail turbodiesel (CRD) engine will arrive in dealerships the first quarter of 2007.

"DaimlerChrysler is a leader in automotive diesel applications in Europe, and it makes sense to continue to build on that experience by offering a modern, clean diesel for the Canadian and US markets," said Craig Love, Vice President – Rear-Wheel-Drive Product Team, Chrysler Group. "The Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD will offer consumers increased fuel economy, class-leading torque, towing and driving range."

Built by Mercedes-Benz, the new 3.0-litre CRD engine produces 215 hp and 376 lbs.ft. of torque plateauing between 1600 and 2800 rpm. Fuel consumption is estimated at 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 9.4 on the highway, with an estimated driving range of 675 km. Clean diesel technology improves fuel economy by as much as 30 percent while producing 20 percent fewer carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Towing capacity for the diesel Grand Cherokee is estimated at 3,356 kg (7,400 lbs.).

The 2005 Jeep Liberty with a 2.8-liter CRD engine was the first mid-size, diesel-powered SUV in North America and its sales far exceeded the manufacturer's expectations. More than 11,000 diesel-powered Jeep Liberty vehicles have been sold.

The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee will also have a flex-fuel capable 4.7-litre V8, which gives customers the ability to use E85 (ethanol-gasoline mix).

The 3.0-litre CRD engine is built by Mercedes-Benz in Berlin, Germany and shipped to the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit for fitment in the Grand Cherokee Laredo, Limited and Overland models.
